Thank you Mayor Breed for all the great work you, your staff, and city workers are putting into making San Francisco a safer and better place to live, especially in regards to initiatives focused on climate change and homelessness; two issues I care deeply about.
As a resident of Alameda, we don’t have the same homeless crisis as in San Francisco or Oakland, but it still breaks my heart to drive past the homeless encampments when driving into SF; a city that is known for its progressive values, yet we can’t seem to take care of our fellow residents.
The homeless initiatives that your administration is pursuing are commendable and it seems like significant progress is being made. However, have you considered piloting a universal basic income (UBI) program in SF?
Stockton is currently experimenting with such a program, and so far the results are promising. As I discuss in the below article, “UBI may be one of the most efficient and impactful ways to lift up the poor — thereby helping to prevent homelessness — and could be an effective measure at ameliorating homelessness by empowering homeless individuals to take control of their lives in their own way”.
